5 Things That Annoy Me When I'm Skiing

The 5 Things That Annoy Me About Skiing in Méribel and Les 3 Vallées

The 5 Little Things That Annoy Me When I'm Skiing

It’s almost noon in Méribel-Mottaret. The sun is shining, the slopes are in great condition, and I could easily keep skiing for a while longer… But my stomach is reminding me it’s time to eat! I already have a place in mind for lunch; now I just need to find the right way to get there.

That’s also part of the fun of the 3 Vallées: setting out from Méribel-Mottaret, exploring the runs in the area, heading to Courchevel, or continuing on to Les Menuires and Val Thorens for a change of scenery. There’s no shortage of options—or breathtaking views! But unless you know the connections by heart, it’s not always easy to find your way around.

Fortunately, The Les 3 Vallées app and its interactive map offer a very handy feature: the routes. The concept is simple: I select my destination and look up a route tailored to my skill level, which takes into account which trails and lifts are open. Here’s a quick overview of the 5 times when a good itinerary makes my life easier!

1. Being hungry, spotting a restaurant… and not knowing how to get there

It's almost noon, my legs are getting tired, and my stomach is telling me it's time for a break! I already have my destination in mind: The Plan of the Hands, near Mont Vallon. In my mind, I’ve already got the plan all figured out: a gourmet break, some sunshine if the weather permits, and some rest to recharge my batteries before heading back out onto the slopes.

One key question remains: Which route should I take to get there? With so many trails to choose from and lifts to locate, I'd rather not just set off at random.

With the route-planning feature of the Les 3 Vallées app, accessible from the interactive map, I select the restaurant and view the suggested route based on my skill level and which slopes and lifts are open. This makes it easier for me to plan my route and get to my lunch break without having to stop and think too much.

Once I get there, I’ll finally be able to focus on a much more serious task: deciding what to eat. Because after a few hours on the slopes, the restaurant menu deserves my full attention!

2. Spending more time looking for your friends than skiing with them

“Let’s meet at the bottom of the run!” Easy to say… except that in a group, not everyone necessarily has the same idea of where to meet. One person took a different run, another stopped for a few minutes, and the last one has already headed back toward a ski lift.

In Méribel and the 3 Vallées, you might quickly find yourself wanting to mix things up and go off on your own to explore different trails. But when it’s time to meet up again, the messages start coming in one after another: “Where are you?”, “Near which lift?”, “Wait, let me check the map!” And that’s how a 5-minute break turns into a full-blown logistical operation.

The problem takes on yet another dimension when the group decides to venture away from the area to head to Courchevel or explore the slopes near Belleville. The ski area is vast, and a poorly planned meeting can quickly waste everyone’s time.

To avoid having to figure out my route at the last minute, I use the Les 3 Vallées app to Select the destination I want to go to and view the suggested route. A good way to better prepare for the trip and get to the meeting point knowing which direction to go.

3. Wanting to explore a new area… then having second thoughts at every intersection

From Méribel-Mottaret, I have a thousand options for varying my runs and discovering new views. But when several runs split off, I sometimes wonder which way to go.

Will this trail take me to the right place? Is it suitable for my skill level? And how do I get to the area I want to explore?

With the new trail map feature in the Les 3 Vallées app, I choose my destination and look up a route that's suitable for my skill level, which takes into account which trails and lifts are open. This lets you explore the ski area with greater peace of mind, without losing the fun of spontaneity!

4. Check the trail map every 5 minutes

A trail map is essential. But let's face it: when you have to unfold it at the trailhead, find your location, and compare several routes, you can quickly waste time.

In Méribel-Mottaret, as elsewhere in the ski area, sometimes just wanting to head to another sector raises a whole series of questions. Which lift should I take? Where is the connecting run? Am I heading in the right direction? When I know the area well, everything seems simple. But as soon as I break my routine or plan to head to a more distant destination, I prefer to check my route.

The Les 3 Vallées app actually helps me plan my trip and find the best route, without wasting any time. It’s also very handy for locating points of interest—such as a first-aid station, a picnic area, or restrooms—directly on the interactive map.

5. Getting swept away to another valley and realizing it’s too late to turn back

It’s 3:15 p.m. The snow is still great; I’ve just had a string of wonderful runs, and I tell myself there’s still plenty of time to enjoy it. Then I realize I’ve strayed far from Méribel-Mottaret and that I’ll have to start thinking about heading back.

It’s the classic trap when exploring Les 3 Vallées: you set out for a short getaway, discover an area that makes you want to keep going, then you check the time and start figuring out how to get back. Whether you’re in Méribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Les Menuires, or even Orelle, it’s best not to wait until the very last run to ask yourself that question!

Which lift should I take? Will I have time to get to Méribel-Mottaret before the lifts close? These questions can quickly take away some of the carefree spirit of the last few hours of skiing.

To avoid rushing at the end of the day, I can select Méribel-Mottaret as my destination in the app and view the suggested route based on my skill level.

Of course, this doesn't mean you shouldn't check the lift schedules and take current conditions into account. But planning my return in advance lets me better organize the end of the day and enjoy the last runs with greater peace of mind.

My advice
I check the time, plan my return trip early enough, and leave myself some leeway before the lifts close. It’s definitely nicer than finding out at the last minute and having to take a taxi!

Less hesitation, more time on the slopes

What I love about Les 3 Vallées is precisely that I can enjoy a change of scenery throughout the day: hitting the slopes around Méribel-Mottaret, stopping at a mountain restaurant, head out to explore another area and admire the peaks from a new perspective. A great day of skiing isn't just about stringing together runs—it's also about taking the time to savor every moment.

So, no, the app will never replace the joy of discovering an unexpected trail or stopping for a moment to admire the scenery. However, it can help you avoid unnecessary detours and the hesitation that causes us to waste precious time.
