Destination Cime Caron - Alt 3200m Suspended above the Alps

WHY GO THERE ?

The view : 360° on the Alps

When you get out of the cable car, slightly climb the hill in front of you and enjoy a 360° panorama. A multitude of mythical mountains are in front of you: Mont Blanc, Grande Casse, Jorasses, Massif de Péclet or Aiguilles d'Arve. All this with a plunging view on Val Thorens...

Technical prouses : the suspended cable car

Built in 1982 by the French manufacturer Poma, it was then the largest cable car in the world (with its 150 places), and this achievement remains a feat for its time. This installation is considered as one of the most impressive in the world and its arrival, half suspended in the void, is spectacular.

Skiing : for the good skiers

Here, no blue runs are on the horizon - this does not prevent your visit if you are more of a leisurely skier since you can go up and down in a cabin to Val Thorens or even to Orelle.

On the ski side, there are 2 mythical black runs and a red one perfect for a nature getaway:

La combe de Caron - black run: a superb 900m corridor, located north, under the cables of the cable car. What an atmosphere! La Combe de Caron is certainly one of the most prestigious slopes in the Val Thorens ski area, an ideal spot for committed but safe skiing. A real paradise the day after the snowfall, but also to be tested when it is a mogul field to warm up your thighs!

La Combe de Rosaël - black run: the black run that goes down to Orelle, the Maurienne side. A few turns after the Cime Caron, we have the impression to leave in another dimension, a new world, unknown and on which the man never put any ski. Suddenly, the slope steepens and you find yourself on a very demanding black run: exposed to the south and rarely groomed, 1100m of descent await you! Le Col de l'Audzin - red slope: a superb red slope with nice curves, for a rhythmic and long ski since you descend on 1000m and 4km before joining the Moutière chairlift.

TIPS FOR SKIING IN ALTITUDE

SKIING ON THE SLOPES OF THE HIGHEST RESORT IN FRANCE

Dress warmly ! The ski area is mainly equipped with chairlifts without bubbles (impossible to turn in case of wind, more frequent in Val Thorens due to the orientation of the ski area and its higher altitude). So think about those moments of inactivity on the lifts and don't hesitate to dress warmly, even if it means taking extra layers in a backpack!

The essentials to avoid getting cold Choose hot mittens rather than gloves to keep your fingers together to preserve your natural body heat. Don't forget your neck warmer: even prefer a fleece neck warmer or don't hesitate to put on 2 on very cold days! Warm ski socks if you don't want to come home with frostbite Technical underwear, top and bottom!

Cime Caron

For a trip with a view:

  1. Take the Combes 1 & 2 chairlift
  2. Then the Chatelet chairlift (For the coldest days and to avoid this sequence of two chairlifts, take the Plattières gondola)
  3. Continue with the Côte Brune chairlift
  4. 2 solutions then for the ski :
    • In red : Chardons slope then blue slope of Plein Sud to Val Thorens
    • In blue: by the Pluviomètre piste, remembering to turn left as soon as you can to reach the Val Thorens resort.

Then take the recent Caron gondola and the Cime Caron cable car to reach your destination of the day!

practical information

Mont Vallon
The October 10, 2023

Mont Vallon

Dominating the valley of Méribel by its height and its pyramidal shape, the Mont-Vallon is an unmissable summit of the 3 Valleys. In a wild and preserved setting, it imposes itself on the bottom of the valley and yet remains easily accessible thanks to the ski lifts. Up there, the panorama offers a plunging view on the biggest glacier of the 3 Valleys and you can do excellent skiing on the two long red runs.
Challenging Black runs

Challenging Black runs

Courchevel is far from being a beginners-only resor - quite the opposite, in fact! Although the runs into the villages are relatively gentle, the mountains rise steeply slightly further up. And it’s Courchevel that is home to the highest number of black runs in the 3 Valleys (12 in total) - to the great delight of thrill-seeking skiers and snowboarders!
