Ensure your holiday goes smoothly: being well-prepared before and during your adventure in the mountains is essential. Keep your fitness and your equipment in shape to make the most of your time on the pistes!
Before embarking on your adventure on the pistes, wake up those ski muscles with a few simple moves. No need to become an athlete, it’s just enough to get your body ready for the mountains. Here are some exercises to try, to reduce your risk of injury:
Squats:Get your legs ready for any challenge by toning and strengthening them.
Forward lunges: Work on your balance with controlled movements which develop your stability.
Circle the arms and ankles: Fluid rotational movements will keep your body supple.
Easy and efficient, these exercises prepare your body to make the most of the mountains!
In Méribel, before heading down your first run, take 5 minutes to warm up! Arm rotations, knee flexes, little jumps and quad stretches (bring your heel up to your bum!).
No matter what level you are, the slopes of Méribel and the 3 Valleys will challenge your physique and your endurance! A few stretches will ensure you have a top day of riding.
Choosing the right ski equipment: essential for a great trip to the mountains. Skis that are appropriate for your level, comfortable ski boots, and protective clothing make all the difference to your experience on the slopes! You can easily buy or rent all you need in the resort of Méribel from specialist shops in Méribel Centre, Morel, the Rond-Point or Méribel-Mottaret.
Choose skis that suit you! Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, choosing the right skis for your level help you ski comfortably, with stability and control. Take the time to choose equipment that is right for your weight, your height, and your ski level. Don’t forget to check the bindings and boots are adjusted, to make sure your day on the pistes goes smoothly.
Comfortable ski boots are key to having a good day on the slopes! Correctly fitted and adjusted ski boots will help you ski pain-free and give you better control of your skis. Make sure that they are close fitting without being uncomfortably tight, and above all, don’t hesitate to ask for help from a specialist boot fitting shop who will help find you the most suitable pair.
Another essential part of your ski holiday is comfortable clothing. Opt for well-fitted items that keep you warm and dry whilst allowing you to move freely. Try to choose breathable fabrics which are waterproof so that you can stay comfy from morning to evening. With good equipment you are free to concentrate on the mountains and your skiing!
After choosing the perfect skis, it’s time to get kitted out: helmet, gloves, anti-fog goggles and sunglasses: make sure you’re well equipped each day. Comfort is key when it comes to enjoying your day on the hill.
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: time to hit the slopes! But here too, the secret is to be patient and stay in tune with yourself. Stick to your own pace and make sure you feel at ease, whilst you savour every moment of the experience. Make a gentle start, especially as you warm up, and give yourself time to adapt to the slopes and the snow conditions.
Impatient for the thrill of the descent? Take it easy! Start with easy runs and listen to your body. There’s no rush, take a break if you need to, the important thing is to relax and enjoy your holiday.
Start out gently on the green and blue runs as you discover (or rediscover) how it feels to slide on the snow. Take your time and don’t try to go too fast: the aim is to build your confidence and feel at ease with your equipment, especially if it’s new to you!
Riding in the mountains takes energy! Have regular breaks and enjoy a hot chocolate (or even a vin chaud if you fancy!) in a mountain restaurant. Don’t forget to take a photo of the mountain panorama, and let your muscles recuperate before heading back out onto the pistes!
Don’t forget: stay hydrated and keep an energy bar or sweet snack in your pocket to give you a quick boost. It’s a good way to maintain your energy levels throughout the day.
For your own safety and that of others, it’s important to keep the rules in mind as you ski.
Here are some simple rules to follow to stay safe on your ski trip:
Control your speed: No need to rush, take your time!
Respect the priority rule: the skier below has right of way
Keep your distance and stop in a safe place: choose a visible spot to avoid collision.
Follow the signage: the notices are there to guide you – follow them!
And if you take a tumble (it happens to us all!) stay calm, allow others to get past, and report the accident if needs be.
